The population of greater Manchester is 4.2% of the UK population, of which 62.9% are of working age, giving a resident labour market of around 1.6 million people.

Greater Manchester’s population gives it national significance. It is the largest single conurbation outside of London in terms of population, ahead of Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow.
